Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho insists he would not swap Giovani Lo Celso for Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes.
Spurs held talks with Sporting CP last summer over a deal to bring the Portugal international to north London. Unable to agree a fee however, they turned their attention to Lo Celso, who arrived on an initial loan deal from Real Betis, an arrangement which has since been made permanent.
United eventually signed Fernandes during the January transfer window with the 25-year-old immediately hitting the ground running on these shores and reigniting his side’s pursuit of a top four finish.
Lo Celso however has continued his good form from before football’s lockdown, cementing his place as a key figure in Tottenham’s midfield. And Mourinho has no regrets over how both deals transpired.
Asked whether he regrets Tottenham missing out on Fernandes last summer, Mourinho told Sky Sports News: “I don’t know anything about that, but if that is true, and if Giovani Lo Celso was the player that came to Spurs [instead of Bruno Fernandes], then I would say I wouldn’t change Giovani Lo Celso for any player.
“[I wouldn’t swap Lo Celso] for any player. It’s not just for Bruno, but for any player.”
